My name is Stefania Surace. I was born in Reggio
Calabria on July 27th 1976 and I lived in Calabria until the age
of 18, when I moved to Rome. I studied piano (classical music) as
a child until I was a teenager. I later took a break from my music
studies and applied to the University in Rome (LUISS "Guido
Carli"). Four years after that, I graduated in Political Science
after which I moved to Belgium because I received a scholarship
for a Master's Degree at the College of Europe in Bruges. I successfully
followed the postgraduate programme of European Political and Administrative
Studies and then returned back to Italy where I began working as
an online journalist and a researcher in economic and social matters.
I soon discovered these fields were not my true passion, so I went
back to the music.
At the age of 27 I bought a new piano and started playing and studying
classical music again. I also began to compose my own music. At
that time, I had no idea about harmony and composition: I did not
even write music scores. At night, I often dreamt about my own compositions
and then, in the morning, reproduced them on the piano and recorded
them. Sometimes exactely as I had dreamed. Other times with little
variations which always come spontaneousely, like improvisations.
With 18 pieces completed, I prepared my first cd ("Segnali
dalle nuvole" - Signs from the clouds). Then, after four years,
I put 18 more pieces in a second work ("Tracce di sogno alla
luce del giorno" - Traces of dreams at the light of day). Meanwhile
I have learned how to write music scores, so I can protect them
through the SIAE (the Italian artists copyright association).
After the certificate in Music Theory and Solfège at the
Conservatoire "Santa Cecilia" of Rome, in 2011 I passed
the exam to obtain the Diploma of "Compimento inferiore",
issued by the Conservatoire "Perosi" of Campobasso, after
successfully completing a five-years study programme. In September
2012, at the "Istituto Superiore di Studi Musicali G. Briccialdi"
of Terni, I was accepted as a regular student to follow the programme
of the Academic Diploma (Degree - Ist level).
